How does a site go about ranking highly in the Google search results? Everyone has a theory and a number of them are rather humorous. In this video, Matt Cutts discusses a few of the common SEO myths he is aware of and why they are myths. Make sure to read my thoughts on his contentions after the video.
As for group think, I’ve learned this painful lesson in the past. My practice was once run through the domain SanDiegoBusinessLawFirm.com. I bought into every SEO theory and service alive. You know what? They worked. I was number one on Google for San Diego business lawyer, internet lawyer and so on.
Then things changed around 2008. Google started clamping down on ranking techniques and my site sunk to the nether regions of ranking hell. Thus the use of this domain.
As a general rule, I avoid doing anything in SEO that “everyone” is doing. The engineers at Google aren’t idiots. They read the boards and articles on the various internet marketing sites and now what people are up to. Even if some scheme works now, you can bet Google will catch up to it.
My personal view is it is now best to build sites through linking techniques that will last the test of time. I’m a particular fan of links on newspaper and media sites, which means going old school with press connections. Even a few of these links will shoot you to the top of the rankings.
